How has cider packaging changed?

For centuries, cidermaking has been a traditional craft, but it has continued to adapt and so has the packaging.

From wooden casks on horse and cart all the way to bespoke glass bottles and sustainable bag-in-boxes, cider packaging has grown with the craft.

Packaging can offer more than storage; it says a lot about the beverage it contains. Whether it’s a glass bottle, a bag-in-box or an aluminium can, packaging can help with brand positioning, sustainable goals and shelf appeal.

Pre 20th Century

  • Cider was stored in wooden barrels (often oak) and commonly sealed with pitch (a natural resin)
  • Casks were transported to pubs on horse-drawn carts
  • Glass or ceramic flagons were used

20th Century

  • A shift towards glass bottles with crown caps to meet a growing need for stable shelf packaging
  • The rise of PET bottles as a lightweight, cost-effective option

21st Century

  • Growth of bag-in-boxes – a lightweight option to keep beverages fresh
  • Increased use of aluminium cans – a cost-effective & durable solution
  • Glass cider bottles are becoming lighter – to meet environmental targets

The Future

Looking to the future, cider packaging will no doubt continue to evolve, with the focus on sustainability and lightweight materials. In order to balance costs, functionality and customer expectations, there are several factors to consider when choosing the correct packaging for you.

Whether your cider is more traditional or has a premium positioning, packaging can make a noticeable difference to your brand and your customers.
